Research says that planning a wedding takes around 12 to 18 months. On an average, this could vary from 200 to 500 hours of tedious and sometimes fun planning. The latter is something that all of us expect out of wedding planning but we all know it is mostly taking pills for your headaches. It is also needless for me to say that the headaches are worth it.
When it comes to finding the one… not the person you’re marrying. But the one wedding cake, be assured it is part of the “sometimes fun” category of wedding planning. Here are a few pointers that you can keep in mind while in the search:
When and where are you getting married?
These questions are highly influential while designing a wedding cake. The venue and season play a huge role. If you’re opting for a grand wedding then the cake would have to go in theme with the grandness. But on the contrary, if you’re looking towards a rustic feel for your wedding then you would have to have a cake with that similar look.
Budget
This cake is going to be the most expensive cake that you will ever purchase, unless you’re part of the Kardashians clan. If you’re wondering why a cake is going to be the most expensive it’s not only because of the tiers in your cake but also because of the creativity, style, artistry and time that the professional has put into the work. Don’t forget to do your research, ask friends and family about how much they spent on their wedding cakes. Also, don’t forget to ask bakers about their budget as well. Once you’ve done this research, set a budget.
Get to it ASAP
Wedding cakes are known to be personal. Which is why they take a lot of time to be designed, approved and executed. You are not going to settle for just any cake which means there are a lot of details in the cake that need to be paid attention to. Contact your bakers AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to fine tune all the details that you need. This will also help avoid any mistakes that might be on the way. On an average couples book their bakers 6 months in advance.
Know the headcount
Before you get to deciding the size of the cake, always have an estimated number of people that are going to attend the wedding. Although you can always choose to have a smaller cake just for the sake of the “cutting cake” ritual. But if you’re planning to feed the whole crowd then don’t forget to ask your baker how many tiers can feed your crowd. Usually a three tier cake feeds 150 guests. But this may very well vary depending on the cutting size. Another thing that you can do is supplement the cake pieces with cupcakes or pastries for the guests.
Now that we’ve mentioned CUPCAKES
We’ve noticed and understood that there are couples that don’t wish for cakes, I know, how is that humanly possible right? But to each couple their own quirk. Looking at alternatives like cupcakes and cheesecakes could definitely be a solution to that cake hating heart.
Yes Fondant/No Fondant
When you imagine your wedding cake, you see two or three tiers, a bride and groom on top with fancy decorations and so on. When it comes to the fanciness that’s when the number one questions lies- Do you want fondant or not? Fondant is the sugary-party part of the cake that can take any shape, colour or form. It’s the best when you want to mould it into any shape you feel like. But fondant might not always taste the best. If you want to avoid this sugary-pasty feel in your mouth then a great alternative to rely on would be buttercream.
Another pointer that you have to remember is that you can only get to designing the wedding cake once you and your partner have made all the stylistic decisions (the colour palette, themes etc.) We hope you get the wedding and cake of your dreams.
